Mudras and Mantras: Leo ~ the fifth sign of the zodiac
Mudras and Mantras: Leo - the fifth sign of the zodiac.
Welcome to the fifth post in my new blog series Mudras and Mantras.
So what are Mudras and Mantras?
Mudras ~ hand gesture that sets an intention and can act as a way of channelling energy. For a lot of people the hands are very expressive and can be an easy way to start a meditative yoga practice.
Mantra ~ is usually a word or sound repeated. In a Yoga practice this is called a Japa practice in which the word/s or mantra is chanted.
Welcome to Leo season, as the sun returns to the sign it rules. Leo symbolised as the Lion, and invites in courage, enthusiasm, adventure, childlike laughing fits, creative expression. We are back in the fire for the first time since Aries season, we have grown as we have moved through the elements in the first 4 signs and move into the 5th house of romance. As we have moved out of the moon sign of Cancer and into sunny sign of Leo it seemed natural to practice Surya Mudra.
Surya is Sanskrit for Sun - Sun Salutations/Surya Namaskar, and Surya Mudra helps us connect into the fiery energy of the sun. The sun is constant, although we have day and night, but when the sun shines it is always the same. Unlike the moon which moves through her phases to return anew. Think solar power when we move into practicing Surya Mudra as its great to invite energy into your practice especially when you feel tired or lethargic.
To practice move into a comfortable seat resting the hands on the knees or thighs, palms facing upwards. Bring the ring finger into the palm with the finger tip touching the base of the thumb and place the thumb on top of the ring finger. The ring finger is connected to the earth element and the thumb is connected to the fire element and this mudra helps to dispel the negative earthy qualities with the fire element. See the photo below.
The mantra for Leo is ‘I will’. In Astrology Leo is the fifth sign of the zodiac and rules the 5th of 12 houses. The fifth house is the house the fun zone of romance, kids and creativity - its time to honour who you are and live your truth and enjoy yourself. If can be easy to be who people think/expect us to be or to live in fear, but Leo is inviting you to have the courage to shine as bright as you can just by being you.
So what will your ‘I will’ mantra be? Keep it fun and playful - I will have the courage to speak my truth, I will be authentically me, I will make time to have fun, I will try something new today. Let me know in the comments below.
