Mudras and Mantras: Aries ~ the first sign of the zodiac

Mudras and Mantras: Aries - the first sign of the zodiac.

As Aries is the first sign of the zodiac I wanted to start my new blog series Mudras and Mantras.

So what are Mudras and Mantras?

Mudras ~ hand gesture that sets an intention and can act as a way a channelling energy. For a lot of people the hands are very expressive and can be an easy way to start a meditative yoga practice.

Mantra ~ is usually a word or sound repeated. In a Yoga practice this is called a Japa practice in which the word/s or mantra is chanted.

For Aries I selected the Shiva Linga Mudra. Shiva represents the grounded masculine and Linga represents the power of light. When balanced, Aries are great time players and motivators and are all about doing and I felt that the Shiva Linga mudra would be great for shining light on where we need to bring in our Aries energy - or for the hot headed Aries where we need to ground and just breathe.

To practice the Shiva Linga mudra the left palm supports the right hand. The right hand is held in a thumbs up relaxed fist and rests on the palm of the left hand. The thumb is connected to all fire mudras and can be great for those needing a boost in self esteem or inner strength. Shiva Linga mudra may also be known as Angi mudra - the gesture of fire!

The mantra for Aries is ‘I am’. In Astrology Aries is not only the first sign of the zodiac but rules the 1st of 12 houses. The first house is the Image Zone, the self or the ego. Though the ego has a bad reputation, we need to find ourselves first to help/be of service to others. Think about self care, taking care of YOUR SELF. Now is the time to check in and discover this aspect of you. Your ‘I am’ mantra may be completed with just the word ME = I am ME! If you need motivation or courage to start a new project you might complete your mantra with ‘I am motivated’, I am courageous’ or ‘I am brave’.
